What is the human brain capable of?
In Super Humans, students explore four fascinating examples of extraordinary human abilities: savant syndrome, perfect pitch, synesthesia, and hyperthymesia (HSAM). Through curated articles, videos, and engaging research activities, students investigate what these abilities are, what researchers know about them, and what they reveal about the incredible variation of the human brain.
Super Humans is a Guided Research & Essay Project (GREP) designed to teach students how to move from research to a strong, organized essay. Rather than sending students off to research a broad topic on their own, GREPs provide carefully selected sources and varied activities that help students find important information, take useful notes, summarize ideas, and collect evidence they can actually use in their writing.
Once the research is complete, students use a step-by-step copy-and-paste prompt system to turn their notes into a polished expository essay. The process explicitly teaches thesis statements, paragraph development, evidence and explanation, transitions, conclusions, and meaningful revision while modelling strong writing along the way.
Students will:
- Explore savant syndrome, perfect pitch, synesthesia, and hyperthymesia
- Work with curated articles, videos, and provided research
- Complete guided research, annotation, and reflection activities
- Organize research and evidence for writing
- Write a multi-paragraph expository essay
- Use guided prompts to develop and strengthen their writing
- Revise for clarity, word choice, detail, and flow
Designed for students who are ready to build stronger research and essay-writing skills while exploring a topic that is high interest and attention grabbing.
