This pickleball module introduces students to one of the fastest-growing recreational sports in North America, giving them the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to get on a court and play.
 
Designed with homeschoolers in mind, the unit combines straightforward instruction with hands-on skill development, independent practice, real-world play and reflection. Students learn how pickleball works, build foundational skills through simple drills, track their time on the court and explore opportunities to keep playing in their own community.
 
Along the way, they’ll also tackle pickleball’s reputation as an “old people’s sport” and create a youth-focused advertising poster designed to give the sport a rebrand.
 
Students will explore:
What pickleball is and why its popularity has exploded
The pickleball court, equipment and key terminology
Rules and scoring
Pickleball etiquette and sportsmanship
Foundational skills including serving, forehand, backhand, volleying, dinking and smashing
Skill-building drills that can be completed with minimal equipment
Independent pickleball practice and play
Pickleball’s reputation and stereotypes
A creative Rebrand Pickleball poster project
Reflection on their experience and skill development
